UH softball team loses final, but wins Paradise Classic

Advertiser Staff

Losing its final game of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic didn't hurt the 16th-ranked University of Hawai'i softball team. Except its pride, and win-loss record.

Hawai'i fell to Long Beach State, 1-0, yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, but was awarded the title because of a better tournament record.

Long Beach State, which beat Central Florida 5-0 in the morning to advance through the losers' bracket, requested that it not play a third game if it beat UH in the afternoon. The 49ers were then told that the game against UH would not be for the championship. Afterwards, tournament officials decided to settle the championship by record.

Hawai'i was 5-1 in the tournament; Long Beach State 4-3.

Brooke Turner pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks to help the 49ers (6-5 overall) beat the 'Bows (5-1).

Kate Robinson gave up four hits while pitching the distance for UH. She yielded Ashley Weber's RBI single in the second.
