Maui caucus voter turn-out 'phenomenal'

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui -- Democratic caucus organizers at Baldwin High School ran out of party registration and other forms by 6:15 p.m., with more than 300 Wailuku and Kahului voters still waiting in line to participate in today's caucus at Baldwin High School and dozens more arriving with each passing minute.

Caucus officials began signing people up on plain pieces of paper to accommodate the crowd, which one official described as "phenomenal."

Some, like Joseph Almendarez, weren't even registered to vote until today.

The 45-year-old hotel worker and sale representative said he hadn't voted in an election since 1992, but is excited that the country appears to be heading in a new direction thanks to the strong Democratic side.

"We need to get back to our roots instead of war roots. Our society has had enough." he said.

Almendarez said he plans to vote for Obama because of his stance against the Iraq war. "He can get us back on track to what this country is really about. I don't think we are about invading other countries, are we?" he said.

Wailuku resident Sarajean Tokunaga, 67, has been active in Democratic politics for 20 years and has never seen so much enthusiasm.

She is supporting Clinton.

"President Clinton and she supported the apology bill to Hawaiians, and as a Hawaiian that's very important. That's a start," she said.
