HAWAII BRIEFS
Measles a worry after Kalihi party

Advertiser Staff

Two hundred and 10 people who attended a Chinese New Year dinner party Saturday at Golden Palace Seafood Restaurant at 111 North King St. in Kalihi may have been exposed to measles by one of the guests, the state Health Department said yesterday.

The party organized by Kwai and Randy Chun was hosted by C.Q. Yee Hop and Co., according to health officials.

The Health Department advises anyone who develops a fever and cough or runny nose between now and Feb. 27 to stay at home and consult a physician.

"Most people in Hawai'i are immune to measles either through vaccination or having had measles in the past, so outbreaks of measles are rare," state epidemiologist Dr. Paul Effler said. "Still, because not everyone is immune and the disease is so infectious, it is possible that someone at the party may become infected with measles."

TB TEST SET FOR STUDENTS, FACULTY

Kahuku High & Intermediate students and faculty exposed to tuberculosis in January are set to receive a skin test today to determine if they have contracted the disease.

Some 99 students and seven adults at the school who came into contact with a teacher who has the disease will be tested by the state Department of Health.

The teacher learned she had TB after visiting a doctor because of illness. Tests done at the time of the visit came back positive for the illness.

The Health Department determined that a certain number of people came in contact with the teacher and will test those people only. Tests are read two to three days after the test is administered.

MAN KILLED IN CAR, HORSE CRASH

A 77-year-old man was killed yesterday on Maui's Kula Highway in a collision between a car and a horse.

Maui police Lt. Bobby Hill identified the victim as Frank N. Williamson of Pukalani.

The collision occurred at 4:43 a.m. on Kula Highway, a half-mile south of mile post 14. Investigators said Williamson was driving a 1994 Chrysler Concord sedan toward 'Ulupalakua when it struck the horse, which was in the roadway. Williamson was pronounced dead at the scene. The horse also died.

FOUR HURT IN PICKUP TRUCK ACCIDENT

An 18-year-old Ha'iku, Maui, man suffered critical injuries early yesterday in a pickup truck crash on Honoapi'ilani Highway in Kapalua.

The man, a passenger in the truck, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The 19-year-old male driver and two other passengers — a girl, 16, and man, 18 — went to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The crash occurred at 3:31 a.m. on Honoapi'ilani Highway near Plantation Club Drive. The Dodge pickup was traveling toward Kapalua when it veered off the roadway and overturned.
