Maui Council committee to debate plastic bag ban

WAILUKU – The Maui County Council's Public Works and Facilities Committee will take up a number of important issues at a meeting in the Council Chamber today at 9 a.m., committee co-chairs Michael P. Victorino and Bill Kauakea Medeiros announced.

The committee will consider: a resolution urging the state Legislature to pass Senate Bill No. 958 (2007) to impose a 10-year moratorium on genetically modified taro; regulations on weddings in county parks; and a proposed ban on the use of nonbiodegradable plastic bags by certain businesses.

"We strongly encourage interested members of the public to submit written and verbal testimony on any of these important issues," Medeiros and Victorino said in a news release.

The meeting is open to the public. Meeting agendas are available on the Public Works and Facilities Committee Web site.
