Man killed in Kaneohe crash was a Marine

Advertiser Staff

A 22-year-old man killed in a fiery single-car crash last night on the H-3 Freeway, a half-mile west of the Mokapu Boulevard overpass, was a Marine stationed at Kane'ohe, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office and Marine Corps Base Hawaii public affairs today declined to release the man's identity until family is notified and his identity confirmed.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said speed was an apparent factor in the crash of the man's 1986 Chevrolet two-door car. The driver lost control of the car, which veered off the roadway, up a hillside and collided with a tree before flipping over at 9:56 p.m.

The car burst into flames and emergency first responders were unable to get the driver out of the car. There was no one else in the car.

The death is O'ahu's seventh traffic fatality in 2008 as compared to 13 on the same date last year.

Current statewide fatality totals as of 4:45 p.m. today:

  • O'ahu (7) — Pedestrian (3), vehicle (3), moped (1).

  • Big Island (7) — Vehicle (5), pedestrian (1), motorcycle (1).

  • Maui (3) — Vehicle (2), motorcycle (1).

  • Kaua'i — Vehicle (2), pedestrian (1).
