HAWAII BRIEFS
Man dies in crash on H-3 off-ramp

Advertiser Staff

A male motorist was killed last night in a fiery single-car crash on an H-3 Freeway off-ramp in Kane'ohe.

The crash was reported at 9:55 p.m. and involved a burning auto on the freeway's west-bound Kamehameha Highway off-ramp.

Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the lone occupant in the vehicle, believed to be a 22-year-old man, was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m.

It was O'ahu's seventh traffic fatality of the year.

LIHU'E MAN KILLED IN SINGLE-CAR CRASH

Kaua'i police yesterday identified a Lihu'e man killed early Sunday in a single-car crash on Hehi Road in Hanama'ulu as Stanford Vierra, 45.

Police said Vierra lost control of the black Acura he was driving west on Hehi Road, also known as Hanama'ulu Beach Road, at 2:12 a.m. The car went off the north shoulder of the roadway and overturned in a ditch.

Vierra was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the car.

Police said alcohol and speed did not appear to be contributing factors.

The death is Kaua'i's third traffic fatality of the year.

PARTY GUESTS MAY CONTRACT MEASLES

There is no ongoing risk of measles from eating at a Chinatown restaurant where a guest with the illness ate on Feb. 9, the state Health Department said.

Measles is not spread through food, so there is no risk at the Golden Palace Seafood Restaurant at 111 N. King St., officials said.

Patrons who attended a party hosted by C.Q. Yee Hop and Company at the restaurant on Feb. 9 may have been exposed to measles from a female guest who attended, not knowing she had measles.

The Health Department advises anyone who attended the party and who develops a fever and cough or runny nose between now and Feb. 27 to stay at home and consult with their doctor.

People with questions about measles may call the Health Department's Disease Investigation Branch at 586-4586.
