Robert Toma scored 14 points and Kameron Steinhoff added 12 as Punahou routed Lahainaluna, 65-32, last night in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Division I State Boys Basketball Championships at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

Punahou (11-3), ranked No. 2 in the Advertiser's Top 10 poll, will play No. 6 and third-seeded Mililani (11-3) in an 8 o'clock quarterfinal tonight.

The Lunas got a game-high 18 points from John Craig, but were no match for the Buffanblu's size and speed.

"Probably a lot of nerves," Lahainaluna coach Eric Balinbin said of his team's performance. "When you miss a lot of layups, it becomes psychological. The basket gets smaller, the ball seems to be slippery. Punahou had really good pressure. What can you do?"

It was frustrating all around for the Lunas. Balinbin was called for a technical for arguing a call in the third quarter, when the Buffanblu opened a 39-18 lead.

Punahou jumped out early, using a 9-0 run in the first quarter in about a four-minute span to take a 12-5 lead after one quarter. It was 26-14 at the half, and the Buffanblu blew it open with an 18-4 third quarter.

The early lead allowed Punahou coach Dan Hale to freely sub to keep his starters fresh for tonight's quarterfinal. It was a good tuneup for the Buffanblu, who hadn't played in about 10 days. Even the reserves got considerable time off the bench last night.

"We've been off quite a while so we needed to get back into sync little bit," Hale said. "We were fortunate. We were able to execute a little bit and get some pressure going on."

The Buffanblu got 22 points from their reserves, with Kimo Makaula leading the way with nine points. Dane Okamura and Kai Gaddis each had 3-pointers to help the Buffanblu pad their lead.

The Lunas took a 2-0 lead with Craig scoring off a fastbreak. They tied it at 3 when Dillon Soldswich made the first of two free throws, but that was the closest the Lunas would get. The Buffanblu went on their 9-0 run and never looked back.
