'Iolani girls shoot down Kalani, 60-37

Advertiser Staff

Continuing its torching of the nets at Kaimuki High School Gym, 'Iolani blitzed Kalani, 60-37, last night in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Division I Basketball Championships.

The unseeded Raiders, runner-up in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, improved to 14-2 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 2 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (14-0) in tonight's 8 o'clock semifinal at Kaimuki.

No. 1 seed and ILH champ Punahou (12-1) beat defending state champ Konawaena, 45-41, and will play unseeded O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Radford (15-1) in the other semifinal at Farrington, also at 8.

'Iolani's shooters seem to enjoy Kaimuki Gym, where the Raiders drained five 3-pointers in a 58-47 first-round victory over 'Aiea on Wednesday and again made five from beyond the arc last night.

And the hot outside shooting again helped open up things for All-State center Jamie Smith, who finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Tami Konishi added two 3-pointers and 11 points, and Kylie Ahlo, Chanel Hirata and Dayna Jandoc each found the net from beyond the arc.

"I'm so proud of them, they came through and that's what we needed," said Smith, an agile 6-foot post whose layup with 4:18 remaining in the first period started 'Iolani on a 12-1 run over the next three minutes. "Everybody shot well, and that's what we're going to need in the state tournament."

Chloe Martin sank three free throws with 22.8 seconds left in the quarter to close it to 14-8, but Konishi swished two 3-pointers to put the Raiders up, 20-12, less than two minutes into the second.

Smith then made a three-point play and a layup to give 'Iolani a 25-13 lead midway through the quarter, and Hirata ended the half with a short runner inside the key just before the buzzer to make it 29-17.

After the Raiders opened the second half with a 10-2 run to go up, 39-19, the Falcons (13-3) could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

"We had a game plan, but once you leave them open, they're going to start hitting those 3's," said Iwalani Rodrigues, Kalani's All-State guard who finished with a team-high 14 points. "We tried hard, we played hard, but they can shoot."

Defensively, 'Iolani limited the Falcons' 6-foot posts, Violet Alama and Rhianna Farm, to a combined nine points. They also held Martin, a dangerous 3-point shooter, to those three free throws.

Rodrigues had only two points in the first half.

"Team-wise, it was important for everybody to take away their posts and know where Iwa was at all times, be aware of where their shooters were," Raiders coach Glenn Takara said. "I think it hurt them when Violet got into foul trouble, and we always had to try and block out."
