Punahou beats Iolani to win state girls DI hoops title

Punahou held Iolani to two field goals over the final 12 minutes to rally for a 46-41 victory tonight in the state girls Division I basketball title at Stan Sheriff Center.

Senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu, who missed last season with a knee injury, had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help Punahou win its third Hawaii High School Athletic Association state title in four years and its 10th overall.

Twin sister Shaena-Lyn, who also missed last season with a knee injury, added 10 rebounds and seven points.

Chanel Hirata led Iolani with 18 points. Jamie Smith was held to nine points.

Iolani took a 16-8 first-period lead and led 23-16 at halftime. But Punahou cut the deficit to 37-33 entering the fourth period. The Buffanblu outscored Iolani 13-4 in the final period.
