Kamehameha-Hawai'i again will try to break the O'ahu stronghold on boys basketball after getting past Kamehameha-Maui, 52-38, last night in a quarterfinal game of the Hawaiian Airlines Division I State Championships at McKinley.

Colton Collins led the Warriors from the Big Island with 12 points. Hogan Rosehill added 11.

KS-Hawai'i (14-2) made a run in last year's state tournament, before falling to eventual state champion, Kaimuki, in the semifinals. KS-Maui (11-5) falls into the consolation bracket.

"I'm happy with the win," said Kamehameha-Hawai'i coach Nelson Wong. "Our energy was a little bit down. I think (Wednesday) night's game took a lot out of us, but I'm happy that we're in the semis for the second year in a row."

KS-Hawai'i went on an 11-2 run to open the game and led 13-7 after the opening quarter.

The Big Islanders picked up where they left off in the second quarter, using a 9-2 run to take a 24-9 lead with three minutes left.

KS-Maui answered with a 6-0 run, but Collins made a pair of free throws and Rosehill scored on a turnaround jumper to put KS-Hawai'i up 28-15 at halftime.

"Hogan has been steady for us," Wong said. "He's been more patient lately in letting the offense come through him. He's a force to be reckoned with."

Rosehill scored 19 points in the Warriors' first-round win over Kalaheo Wednesday.

KS-Hawai'i extended its lead to 41-25 after three quarters and held its largest lead with 2:58 to play on a putback by Rosehill that made it 52-33.

"We came out flat again," said KS-Maui coach Lance Cagasan. "Hats off to KS-Hawai'i, they played a really good game. They passed the ball well, rebounded well. We did a poor job of blocking out and gave them too many second-chance shots."

Kekoa Turbeville led KS-Maui with 12 points, including three 3-pointers.
