UH-Hilo baseball team sweeps two from Kansas

Hawai'i-Hilo scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 12-4 victory over Kansas today in the second game of a baseball doubleheader sweep at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.

The Vulcans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the first game, 4-3.

UH-Hilo improved to 3-3, while Kansas dropped to 1-2.

In the first game, Ronel Trias went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs. Joe Davis allowed four runs and seven hits, striking out eight and walking two in seven innings to earn the victory.

With the first game tied at 3 after the scheduled seven innings, Keoni Manago singled with one out, went to second on a single by Cade Uyetake. Shane Kessel reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Manago to score the winning run. Dustin Gilmore pitched two shutout innings to earn the victory.
