Robinson lifts UH past Florida Atlantic, 6-0

Kate Robinson pitched a five-hit shutout and hit a solo home run to lead the Hawai'i softball team to a 6-0 victory over Florida Atlantic in the first day of the Palm Springs (Calif.) Classic.

Hawai'i is 6-1. FAU is 5-7.

Robinson struck out two and walked one in seven innings.

She hit her homer to left-center field in the fifth inning. Richie-Anne Titcomb hit a solo shot in the sixth inning.

UH plays Michigan State and UCLA today.


GOLF

UH MEN FINISH 19TH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 4-overpar 292 yesterday to finish 19th in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Warrior team at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Auburn shot a 269 and finished at 44-under 820 for an 11-stroke victory over Texas A&M (276) in the 21-team tournament. The Warriors were at 874. finished the in 19th place Friday.

Stephen Hale of California shot a 67 today for a 201 and a two stroke victory over Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M (65) and Herbert Day of Texas-El Paso (68).

Kyle Walters (76—216) was UH's top finisher, tying for 54th.


BASEBALL

'IOLANI ALUM LEADS KU

'Iolani alum Wally Marciel pitched six strong innings to help Kansas to a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday in a college baseball game at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.

Kansas is 1-0. UH-Hilo is 1-3.

Marciel, a sophomore, allowed an earned run, and five hits, striking out four and walking one.

Buck Afenir singled Ryne Price with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning for Kansas.

UH-Hilo took a 1-0 lead on Thomas Brown III's RBI single in the third inning. Kansas tied it on an RBI double by Price in thefourth inning.


BASKETBALL

JAMBOREE AT MANOA

Some of the top female basketball players in the state are scheduled to play today in the 15th annual Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree at Manoa Gym.

Games in three divisions — 12 and under, 14 and under and high school/college alumnae — begin at 9 a.m. and continue all day.

Participants are expected to include high school stars Shawna-Lei and Shaena-Lyn Kuehu of Punahou, Kalani's Iwalani Rodrigues, 'Iolani's Jamie Smith and Vicky Tagalicod of Hilo.

Former college players from Hawai'i scheduled to play include Nani Cockett, Milia Macfarlane and Lynette Liu (University of Hawai'i), Brandy Richardson (UC Santa Barbara) and Megan Ching (Cal State Northridge).

Admission for the single-elimination tournament is free. Donations are welcome, with proceeds going to the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association.


SWIMMING

BERRY WINS 200 FREE

University of Hawai'i's Emma Berry won her second individual event — the 200-yard freestyle — yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in San Antonio.

Berry, a transfer from Indiana, finished in 1 minute, 48.08 seconds, an NCAA provisional time. Danielle Maddock of Nevada was second in 1:51.28. Berry also won the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday and was a member of UH's winning 800 freestyle relay team on Wednesday.

UH diver Raquel Bartlow finished second in the 3-meter with an NCAA provisional 314.60 points. Natalie Hughes of Northern Arizona was first with 317.85 points.

Nevada lead the meet, entering today's final day, with 499 points, followed by Northern Arizona (433), Hawai'i (383), New Mexico State (329), San Jose State (312), Idaho (215), Boise State (164) and San Diego (159).
