High surf advisory for southern shores

Advertiser Staff

An unseasonable south swell is expected to arrive today, raising surf to advisory levels from 6 a.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow.

The National Weather Service said the unusually large swell for this time of the year, with surf to 8 feet, was generated by a powerful storm southeast of New Zealand a week ago.

Surf along south shores is typically smaller during the winter months, with most of the big swells hitting north and west shores. South shore surf is usually at its biggest during summer months.

Elsewhere, surf along east and north shores will be 2 to 4 feet and west shores will see surf 4 to 7 feet.

A large northwest swell, possibly near warning levels, will build on Monday, peak on Tuesday, then lower on Wednesday, the Weather Service said. Another large northwest swell will follow Wednesday and Thursday.
