Abandoned structure catches fire on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters on the Big Island had to put out a fire shortly after midnight today at an abandoned structure in the Lanakila housing area.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters and police responded to the first alarm at 12:11 a.m. and were on the scene at 75 Ekahi St. in Hilo at 12:14 a.m. The small blaze in the back bathroom was under control with six minutes and extinguished within 9 minutes. Firefighters arrived to see moderate smoke pouring out of the structure but didn't see the flames until going to the back bathroom. The probable cause is believed to be arson because there is no heat or power sources in the unit, the fire department said.

The dwelling was unoccupied. Loss are estimated at$5,000 is damages are repaired.
