Maui police standoff with gunman in 7th hour

Advertiser Staff

A standoff involving Maui police and a 30-year-old gunman at the Harbor Lights Condominium at 1111 Kahului Beach Road entered its seventh hour at 11:45 tonight.

Since the guman is alone in the unit, police can afford to wait him out. Officials have not identified the gunman.

According to Maui police spokesman Lt. Wallace Tom, the standoff began at 4:45

p.m. when police attempted to arrest the man on a no-bail warrant. After

spotting the officers, the man ran into a unit in "D" building, where he is believed to be a resident, Tom said.

The fugitive armed himself with a shotgun and a pistol, and fired one round, Tom added. No injuries have been reported, said Tom.

Police communicated with the man for 20 minutes but the talking stopped and hasn't resumed, Tom said.

About 100 residents from "D" building were evacuated first to the parking lot and were later bused by Polynesian Adventure Tours to an emergency shelter at the War Memorial Gym, where American Red Cross volunteers and County Parks Department staff are assisting them, said Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

Kahului Beach Road was closed at 5 p.m. between Ka'ahumanu Avenue and Wahine Pio Avenue but reopened at 10:20 p.m. The entry to the condominium complex, however, is closed.
