Hilo cellblock death reported

Advertiser Staff

A 47-year-old Hilo woman died today while in police custody on the Big Island.

Ann Marie Lewis was found unresponsive in a single-occupancy cell at the Hilo police cellblock at approximately 8:45 a.m. Fire rescue personnel were immediately summoned, but she could not be revived, police said.

Lewis was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m.

Lewis had been taken into police custody at 10:53 the previous evening after her release from Hilo Medical Center. She was arrested on two outstanding warrants issued for revocation of her probation, and she was unable to post $100,000 bail, police said

The investigation into Lewis' death is being conducted by detectives assigned to the department's Criminal Investigations Section, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to determine the cause of death.

A standard administrative investigation is also being conducted by the police Internal Affairs Division to determine if department policies and procedures were followed during Lewis' confinement, police said.
