Alcohol, speed factors in critical Waipio crash

Advertiser Staff

A 56-year-old man injured in a one-car crash yesterday on the H-2 Freeway near the Ka Uka Boulevard overpass in Waipi'o is in critical condition today at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

Vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said the crash occurred at 6:05 p.m. on the H-2 Freeway southbound, one-quarter mile before the Wai'anae offramp.

The motorist apparently lost control of his 2003 Nissan Altima, which hit a concrete barrier and rebounded back onto the freeway. No one else was in the car, Ridella said.

An open alcohol container was in the car resulting in the driver's arrest for investigation of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. Speed is also an apparent factor in the crash.
