John Kosty loves Hawai'i, particularly recruiting in the state.

The second-year Stanford men's volleyball coach has three former Interscholastic League of Honolulu standouts on his Cardinal roster.

  • Kawika Shoji, a 2006 graduate of 'Iolani, who was named Advertiser State Player of the Year in 2004 — an honor he shared with current Stanford teammate Jordan Inafuku.

  • Inafuku, a 2006 graduate of Kamehameha, was an all-state selection four years for the Warriors.

  • Spencer McLachlin, a 2007 Punahou graduate, earned Player of the Year honors in both his junior and senior seasons for the Buffanblu.

"Combined, they bring great volleyball knowledge and skill," Kosty said. "They've played volleyball longer than all of my players currently on the team. They've all played since they were 12-and-under. That amount of volleyball just brings a whole different ability."

An ability that has allowed each to earn a spot in No. 9 Stanford's starting lineup.

"They've had a lot of experience in club and high school volleyball and that's given them the ability to play well as freshmen," Kosty said.

Shoji, who is 6 feet 3, has made the transition back to setter after seeing time at outside hitter as a freshman last season.

"We've asked a lot of him to play as both an outside hitter and setter in both of his first two season," said Kosty. "He's reacted very well to both situations. That experience has helped him grow as a leader on our team."

Shoji had 53 assists and 15 digs Saturday to lead the Cardinal to a sweep of then-No. 1 Brigham Young. It was the Cougars' first loss of the season.

"Kawika played a great game," Kosty said. "He set a really good offense, made some really good choices."

McLachlin, 6-7 freshman outside hitter, had a team-high 16 kills, including match point.

"Spencer had a tremendous weekend statistically," Kosty said.

McLachlin also had 18 kills against just three errors on 37 attempts in Friday's five-game loss to BYU. He had a .405 hitting percentage for the match.

    Inafuku, a 6-foot freshman libero, had 11 digs Friday and a team-high 16 Saturday.

"Starting as a freshman in this league and being successful early on, the sky is the limit for both of them," said Kosty of McLachlin and Inafuku. "Both are tremendous volleyball players, but both have room to improve."

Familiar faces have helped the transition for the trio.

Assistant coaches Al Roderigues and Ken Shibuya have been involved with the USA Volleyball Developmental Program, which all three players took part in.

Also, Shoji's sister, Cobey, is the director of volleyball operations for the Stanford women's team.

The Cardinal are 10-6 and 6-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Stanford hosts Hawai'i in a pair of MPSF matches today and tomorrow.
