Rehabilitation Hospital gets power-backup funds

Advertiser Staff

The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific has received a $150,000 grant to install underground fuel tanks essential to operating generators during a crisis.

The tanks will hold 1,700 gallons of fuel.

"I'm so thankful to receive this grant, because our situation was dire — at 100 percent capacity, we could power essential hospital systems for less than a day," said Ed Nagamine, Rehabilitation Hospital plant operations manager. "With these new tanks, we will be able to sustain the hospital for three full days — even operating at 100 percent capacity."

The hospital is the only acute care rehabilitation facility serving both Hawai'i and the Pacific. Each year, the hospital treats nearly 8,000 patients recovering from strokes, brain, spinal cord and orthopedic injuries and sports injuries.
