Punahou School sophomore Carissa Moore upset defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in the third round of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast women's surfing contest today.

The event is being run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia.

Moore is still an amateur surfer, and got into the contest through the trials heats.

It is the second consecutive year that she upset the No. 1-ranked surfer in the Roxy Pro. Last year, Moore placed second in the contest, and beat Australia's Layne Beachley along the way.

Moore scored an 8.83 with around two minutes remaining in the heat to defeat Gilmore. Moore's two best waves scored a total of 15.33 to top Gilmore's total of 14.5.

Moore and Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinals.

The final is expected to run later tonight. It is the opening contest of the 2008 World Championship Tour.
