No. 1 Arizona State beats Hawaii in baseball, 3-0

Five pitchers combined on a five-hitter to lead No. 1 Arizona State over Hawai'i, 3-0, today in the Coca-Colca Classic at Billy Parker Field in Surprise, Ariz.

The Rainbows had the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but Jon Hee grounded to short for a force at second to end the game.

It was the third shutout of the season for the Sun Devils (5-0), who played their closest game to date. ASU had scored 41 runs in their previous four wins.

Starter Jason Franzblau (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing only two walks with a strikeout. He did not need to go the minimum five innings for the decision because it was predetermined that ASU would be staff the game. Jason Jarvis came in from left field to get the final out for his first save.

Jared Alexander (2-1) allowed two runs, one earned and eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the Rainbows (5-4).

The Sun Devils got on the board first. In the bottom of the second, Ike Davis led off with a single to left-center and took second when Petey Paramore grounded out to the pitcher. Alexander struck out Jason Jarvis, but Marcel Champagnie reached first on shortstop Greg Garica's fielding error that allowed Davis to score to give ASU a 1-0 lead. Alexander then struck out Mike Jones to end the inning.

Arizona State added a run in the seventh. Champagnie led off with a triple to right. With the infield drawn in, pinch hitter Matt Newman reached on a fielder's choice grounder to second, where second baseman Hee threw Champagnie out at the plate. But Raoul Torrez tripled to center off Alexander to make it 2-0. Nick Rhodes came in for Alexander and walked Brett Wallace to put runners at the corners. But Rhodes struck out Kiel Roling and got pinch hitter Greg Bordes to pop to second to end the inning.

The Sun Devils padded their lead in the eighth. Davis led off with a double, but was thrown out trying to score after Paramore's double to right-center. Paramore took third on the throw home. Rhodes struck out Jason Jarvis, but Champagnie tripled to right-center to make it 3-0.
