The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team should be receiving a bunch of gifts for "Senior Night" tomorrow.
Last night, the Rainbow Warriors gave one away in a stunning 85-77 loss to Idaho.
It snapped a 27-game road losing streak for the Vandals, including 13 straight this season.
"We scored enough points, I thought," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "But you have to get (defensive) stops. That's what wins games for you at the end. When (Idaho) needed a big basket, they got it."
A crowd of 3,911 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the 'Bows fall to 11-15 overall with their third consecutive loss. Hawai'i is 7-6 in the Western Athletic Conference, and still in fifth place.
Idaho improved to 7-19 and moved into a tie for seventh in the WAC at 4-10.
Idaho's Michael Crowell forced overtime with a 3-pointer from 23 feet away with 22.1 seconds remaining in regulation. The Vandals then hit 5 of 6 shots from the field and out-scored Hawai'i 17-9 in overtime to complete the upset.
"I think you have to give Idaho credit, they did what they needed to do to be successful," Nash said. "In overtime, they just out-played us, I thought. We were a little flat, and a little fatigued. They shot the ball unbelievable in overtime."
The loss overshadowed solid performances from several 'Bows.
Bill Amis scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He also led the team with six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Bobby Nash played the entire 45 minutes, and finished with 19 points and five assists.
Matt Gibson came off the bench due to a knee injury, and responded with 18 points and nine assists in 35 minutes before fouling out late in overtime.
"They shot good percentages," Gibson said of the Vandals. "We should have been up closer, tighter on the shooters."
Sophomore Adhar Mayen contributed a career-high nine points in a reserve role for Hawai'i.
But the 'Bows had no answer for Idaho point guard Jordan Brooks. The 6-foot-3 junior drove through the Hawai'i defense all game, finishing with 15 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds.
"He was just a beast in there," Nash said. "He's a great player."
Most of Brooks' assists came after he penetrated into the lane, and then found open teammates on the perimeter.
"If I start passing it first, it's going to start opening the floor up for me as I drive," Brooks said. "So that's what I was trying to do tonight, be a point guard first."
Crowell added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and hit four of Idaho's 11 3-pointers. The Vandals shot 50 percent (11 of 22) from 3-point range.
Idaho also out-rebounded the 'Bows, 41-27. "That's too many second-chance points," Nash said.
The 'Bows trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, and seven in the second half, but rallied to take a 68-65 lead in the final minute of regulation.
Nash went 4 of 4 on free throws to give Hawai'i the 68-65 lead with 30.3 seconds remaining. The four free throws were a direct result of a technical foul assessed on Brooks for arguing.
"That made me even madder," Brooks said. "They messed up when they did that."
After Nash's final free throw, Crowell took a pass on the left wing and drained the tying 3.
"It's disappointing to lose on a home court, or lose anywhere," Bob Nash said. "It's doubly disappointing when you have the lead and all you have to do is come down and make a stop on defense."
On Hawai'i's final possession of regulation, Idaho's Darin Nagle blocked a shot by Amis.
Hawai'i never had the lead in overtime. Brooks' driving dunk with 1:22 remaining gave the Vandals an insurmountable 79-73 lead.
"Who ever, in this league or any league," Brooks said of his ability to drive past the Hawai'i defenders.
With Gibson on the bench, the 'Bows fell into a 15-7 deficit to open the game. Idaho eventually increased it to 31-16, but Hawai'i closed the first half with a 12-2 run to cut it to 33-28 at halftime.
"I wish I could have been in practice (this week)," Gibson said. "But you deal with what you got."
Hawai'i will host first-place Boise State tomorrow for "Senior Night" - the final home game of the season.
