Mead hurls no-hitter as HPU earns split

Kaimi Mead pitched a seven-inning no-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Northwest Nazarene, 7-0, last night in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Field.
Mead, who improved to 2-0 on the season, struck out 10 and walked three to help the Sea Warriors (10-3) salvage a split with the Crusaders (7-2) from Nampa, Idaho.
Danny Lee, Spencer Omalza and Paul Nishimura each had two hits and Aaron Asher drove in three runs for HPU.
The Sea Warriors took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with Omalza and Nishimura hitting RBI singles and Asher bringing home the third run with a sacrifice fly.
In the opener, Jimmy VanBeek had four hits and Mitch Kochis added three hits and three RBIs as Northwest Nazarene won, 12-7.
Lee and Jonah Hobson each had two hits and two RBIs for HPU.

FUJIKAWA FALTERS
Tadd Fujikawa's professional golf struggles continued yesterday as the Moanalua High School junior shot an 8-over-par 78 in the first round of the PGA Tour's Honda Classic.
Fujikawa, 17, is tied for 139th entering today's second round at the PGA National Resort and Spa, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Fujikawa beat only Billy Andrade, Joe Ogilvie and Kevin Stadler yesterday, in his 11th professional start. He is still looking to make his first cut.
Fujikawa hurt his chances early, starting bogey, double-bogey. He had two more bogeys and another double-bogey on the front, where he shot 42. Fujikawa had a third double on the 17th. His lone birdie came on the 12th. He played the back in 1-over.
Fujikawa needed 33 putts and hit just half the greens in regulation. He trails leader Luke Donald by 14. Donald won this event two years ago.
BASKETBALL
DIXIE SWEEPS CU
Kasey Winters had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Dixie State upset Chaminade, 72-67, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at St. George, Utah.
Troy Randall scored 12 points and Bowie Jeffs 11 for the Rebels (13-14 overall, 10-8 PacWest).
Marko Kolaric had 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Silverswords (19-7, 14-3). Rodrick Johnson added 15 points, Stewart Kussler 14 and Hayden Heiber 11 for Chaminade.
Earlier, Jessica Carver had 12 points and 13 of the 14 Dixie State players who saw action scored as the Rebels routed the Silverswords, 92-46.
Sammi Griffiths added 10 points for the Rebels (16-11, 12-6).
Simrin Cummins had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Katherine Carlisle added 14 points for Chaminade (0-24, 0-17).
SWIMMING AND DIVING
UH STAYS IN SECOND
The University of Hawai'i men's swimming and diving team scored a pair of second-place finishes yesterday to remain second after two days of the Conference USA Championships at Houston.
Senior Grzegorz Mroz placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 23.15 seconds.
The 400-medley relay team of Darren Maxwell, Nicola Xella, Greg Wilson and Davis Kane finished second in 3:17.23.
Xella also finished in fourth in the 200 individual medley in 1:51.82, and Kane placed fifth in the 50 freestyle in 20.43.
Southern Methodist leads with 337.5 points, followed by UH with 270 and East Carolina with 218.5.
SOFTBALL
HPU TOPS NETHERLANDS
Jessica Adolph batted 4 for 4 with two RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific beat the Netherlands Olympic team, 8-1, yesterday in a nine-inning exhibition game at the Sea Warrior Field in Kane'ohe.
Nicole Riviera had three hits and two RBIs, and Casey Sugihara added two hits for HPU.
Courtney Kessell, Sherise Musquiz, Ashley Valine and Tajia Acierto teamed on a four-hitter.
Nathalie Timmermans hit a home run for the Netherlands.
