Tennis: Murray advances to Qatar quarterfinals

Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar — Andy Murray beat Rainer Schuettler 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 today to advance to the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open.

The third-seeded Briton next plays former Australian Open winner Thomas Johansson of Sweden, who defeated Germany's Michael Berrer 6-3, 7-5.

"I made too many mistakes in the first set," said Murray, a finalist here last year. "The most important thing was to hang in there ... I changed my style of play in the second and third sets. I was coming to the net more and using the slice shots."

Defending champion Ivan Ljubicic and Dmitry Tursunov also moved into the quarterfinals Wednesday — without hitting a ball.

Ljubicic's opponent, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, pulled out due to fever, and Germany's Nicolas Kiefer was unable to play eighth-seeded Tursunov due to a right shoulder injury.

Sixth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany eased past Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-4, 6-1. Kohlschreiber is next up against Ljubicic.

Also, Agustin Calleri of Argentina beat Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea Lee 6-3, 6-1, and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland defeated Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-2, 7-5.
