Search to begin for new fire chief on Maui

The Maui News

KAHULUI — The Maui County Fire & Public Safety Commission has scheduled a public hearing Jan. 9 as it begins the process of selecting a new fire chief, The Maui News reported.

The public hearing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Lihikai School cafeteria.

On Jan. 10, the commission will hold its regular meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the David Trask Building on Kaohu Street in Wailuku. Selection of the chief will be among items on the agenda.

The new chief will replace Carl Kaupalolo, who retired at the end of 2007 after more than four years as chief and 32 years in the fire department.

Chairman William "Butch" Soares said the nine-member commission will schedule interviews of the applicants, probably starting in late January.

He said the Department of the Corporation Counsel is reviewing resumes of approximately nine applicants to verify candidates' qualifications for the job.
