BIG ISLAND
Sierra Club offers talk on Mauna Kea development

Advertiser Staff

Longtime Sierra Club member Debbie Ward will offer a talk titled "Mauna Kea...Who's Doing the Planning? And Who Should?" at a Sierra Club meeting on Jan. 23.

Ward has worked for years on Mauna Kea environmental and cultural issues.

Significant developments are expected this year on proposals to develop more astronomy sites on Mauna Kea, including plans for the Pan-STARRS telescope designed to detect asteroids or other objects that might threaten Earth; and the Thirty-Meter Telescope, which would be the largest and most powerful telescope in the world.

Ward will speak at Ola'a Center in Kea'au. The event will include a potluck supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6 p.m. For more information, call Cory Harden at 968-8965.
