Gov. Linda Lingle has released nearly $3 million to expand the library at Waimalu Elementary School in 'Aiea.

Waimalu Elementary School's current library was built in 1959 and, at 3,888 square feet, is about 35 percent smaller than what state Department of Education guidelines suggest for a school of its size. The project will expand the library as well as improve its electrical system.

The total project cost is estimated at $3,783,000, of which $847,000 was allotted in 2006. Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in July 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2008 and be completed in October 2009.
