Isle judges score high in eyes of lawyers, jurors

Advertiser Staff

Twenty state judges received favorable reviews from most attorneys who participated in the Judicial Performance Program in 2007.

Eight judges were also evaluated by jurors. The annual report, released recently, does not list the reviews for individual judges.

The mean scores for legal ability, judicial management skills, comportment and settlement and/or plea argument ability ranged from 4.0 to 4.2 on a 5-point scale when all the judges were evaluated by attorneys.

Jurors asked to evaluate judges gave them a mean score of 4.8 for overall performance.

This year, five District Court judges were evaluated as part of an Internet pilot project. Six District Court judges and nine Circuit Court judges were evaluated by standard mail.

The report can be viewed on the Judiciary's Web site at www.courts.state.hi.us. It can also be viewed at the Supreme Court Law Library on O'ahu and Circuit Court law libraries on the Big Island, Maui and Kaua'i.
