News Release

The Hawaii State Library is scheduled to host "Good Vibrations – Yarira mbira! (The mbira music is happening)," featuring mbira musician Erica Azim, on Monday, Jan. 14 at noon in the lobby. Admission is free.

Azim, one of the first Americans to study in Zimbabwe with traditional masters of the mbira, will present a program on this African musical instrument, which consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a gwariva (hardwood soundboard) made from the mubvamaropa tree.

Come and hear the mbira's unique sounds and learn about its history and importance to the Shona culture of Zimbabwe.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, this 45-minute program is recommended for all ages.
