Hawaii Kai board calls meeting to consider Ka Iwi cabins

Advertiser Staff

A developer's proposal to build vacation cabins on the Ka Iwi Coast will be the topic of a special meeting of the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board on Tuesday.

In September 2006, QRM LLC's proposal to build 180 800-square-foot cabins on two parcels of preservation land was never processed by the Department of Planning and Permitting on the grounds that it was incomplete and had failed to prove that the cabins would be an accessory use to outdoor recreation in the area. Details of the new proposal are unclear.

The new project will be reviewed by the DPP for a conditional-use permit major, which requires the applicant to appear before the neighborhood board and undergo a public hearing process.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria at 595 Pepe'ekeo St.

"The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board is already on record as opposing development on the Ka Iwi Coast hillside," said Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board chair Greg Knudsen. "The effort to revive development in this pristine area is likely to generate a tremendous amount of community interest and reaction."
