HILO
Tip helps find suspect in attempted-murder case

Advertiser Staff

A CrimeStoppers tip has led to the arrest of a 48-year-old O'ahu man wanted in connection with an attempted murder investigation on the Big Island.

Honolulu police arrested 48-year-old Fred Silva III on an arrest warrant yesterday morning in Wai'anae. He was charged with attempted murder, and is being held on O'ahu until Big Island police return him to Hilo in the next several days.

Police had been looking for Silva since a Puna man was hospitalized Nov. 25 after being awakened at night in his Fern Forest home and beaten by a man with a rubber mallet and a baseball bat. The injured man was beaten unconscious and suffered numerous broken bones and internal injuries, police said.

The injured man provided a partial identity of his attacker, and police issued the arrest warrant for Silva. Silva had recently been released from prison after serving a 20-year term for a 1986 manslaughter conviction on O'ahu.
