KALAELOA
Holiday meal given to transitional-housing vets

Advertiser Staff

About 200 military veterans staying at the U.S. Vets-Hawaii center at the former Barbers Point Naval Station in Kalaeloa received a holiday meal on Tuesday thanks to the Rotary Club of Kapolei.

This is the second year that Kapolei Rotarians have organized an effort to get the vets a special meal for the holidays.

Rotarians Bill and Lile Hanson donated $500 toward the cost of the meal. Cooks and kitchen help at Kapolei Chinese Restaurant agreed to come in one hour early to prepare the seven-course meal. The Well of Hope Foundation donated for paper goods and Christmas candy, 'Ewa Beach line dancer Winnie Sambrano and her team prepared dessert, Carole Kai and Hawaii Stars Events donated $250 for water, juice, soda and other beverages, and Hawaiian Ice owner Eddie Onouye donated large bags of ice.

At the center, veterans from the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and Iraq War receive transitional housing while learning new skills, attending classes or receiving treatment.
