Coach arrested on sex-assault charge

Police yesterday arrested a 28-year-old Makiki man for questioning after a 13-year-old girl told police that the man, an assistant volleyball coach for her team, sexually assaulted her over a two-month period.

The man went voluntarily to the main police station and was booked for investigation of first-degree sex assault. Police questioned and released him at 4:20 p.m. pending further investigation.

Police did not identify where the man coaches.

The sex assaults allegedly occurred from Nov. 3 through Wednesday, police said.



BABY HOSPITALIZED; POLICE INVESTIGATE

Police yesterday were investigating circumstances that led to a 2-month-old Kane'ohe boy being admitted to a hospital unconscious and in critical condition.

The infant was unresponsive and suffering from respiratory failure when admitted to an undisclosed hospital at 5 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

There have been no arrests, police said yesterday.



S. BERETANIA LANES CLOSED FOR REPAIRS

Three mauka lanes of South Beretania Street between Alapa'i and Lauhala streets in the area of the Board of Water Supply building will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. today through 5 a.m. Tuesday because of roadwork.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the closure period, in which construction will take place 24 hours a day.

In addition, there will be other lane closures in the area for resurfacing through Jan. 11.

The project involves reconstructing sidewalks and roadways, resurfacing, installing curb ramps, creating concrete bus pads, adjusting utility poles and manholes, replacing signs and reflector markings, improving the drainage system and installing pavement markings.



2 BANKS ROBBED IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS

Police yesterday were looking for a robber who struck two banks less than 1½ hours apart on Wednesday. Bank cameras show the man wearing the same clothes in both cases.

In the first case, the man entered Hawaii National Bank at 1505 Dillingham Blvd. in Kalihi at 2:22 p.m., but left empty-handed when the teller "froze" and did not hand over any money, police said.

At 3:35 p.m., the man entered American Savings Bank at 94-060 Farrington Highway in Waipahu, handed the teller a note demanding money and received an undisclosed amount of cash. He left in a white four-door compact car driven by an accomplice.

Police released a photo of the robber, above, who was described as in his 20s, 5 feet 6, and 160 pounds. He was wearing a khaki jacket, blue jeans, blue tennis shoes and sunglasses.

INMATE ARRESTED IN MA'ILI ROBBERY

Police yesterday arrested a man being held at O'ahu Community Correctional Center on suspicion that he was one of four men involved in a home-invasion robbery in Ma'ili on Nov. 27.

The man, 29, is at OCCC for offenses unrelated to the robbery. He was arrested for first-degree robbery at 9 a.m. after being identified by the victim and witnesses.

The arrests of three other male suspects, ages 30, 25 and 24, are pending.

The man arrested yesterday has six prior convictions, including four for first-degree burglary and one for auto theft.

Four men carrying guns and wearing clothing marked "DEA" forced their way into a home on Kula'aupuni Street at 1:45 a.m. on Nov. 27 and allegedly robbed six people.

The men allegedly assaulted one person and fled with a safe containing cash and jewelry belonging to a woman, 27.



SUSPECT HELD IN MCCULLY ROBBERY

Charges were pending against a 39-year-old McCully man arrested Wednesday night in Chinatown on suspicion of robbing American Security Bank's McCully branch earlier in the day.

Police said the man was injured while trying to run from police, who arrested him fronting 1128 Nu'uanu Ave. at 10:47 p.m. Wednesday for first-degree robbery. He was hospitalized but discharged yesterday to police custody.

The suspect has 11 prior convictions, including first-degree burglary, kidnapping, second-degree robbery and second-degree forgery.
