Beach park on Maui gets new lifeguard tower

The Maui News

Henry Barnes of California gives a lifeguard thumbs up after asking for advice outside the new, temporary tower Sunday morning at Kamaole Beach Park II. The new tower, which is made of Fiberglas and stainless steel, is in place while crews work to fix the previous tower, which was damaged by last month's Kona storm.

The old lifeguard tower currently sits in a fenced area. Kamaole Beach Park II is now partially opened to the public. Waterlines have been repaired and restrooms and showers are now available. Parts of the middle section of the park remain closed because of the damaged wooden lifeguard tower and beach erosion.

Entrances to the park are at the north and south ends. Lifeguards are on duty at the new tower from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Bob Richardson, chairman of the Kihei Community Association's Parks Committee, said he was pleased at how quickly the county parks department moved to install a temporary lifeguard tower.
