Maui meeting set on Maalaea harbor improvements

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has scheduled a public meeting tomorrow to discuss its proposed ferry-system facility upgrades, new sewage pump-out system and electrical improvements at Maui's Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the harbormaster's office in the old Sea Flight building on the south mole of Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor.

"We encourage harbor users to attend the meeting," DLNR chairperson Laura H. Thielen said in a written statement. "This long-awaited project will provide the necessary facilities to properly dispose of vessel sewage which will reduce the amount currently being disposed of in the ocean."

There are currently no pump-out facilities at the harbor and vessels either dispose of their sewage at sea or have it pumped out by a private pump truck.

The Ma'alaea improvement project proposes to construct two public pump-out facilities, individual pump-out risers on the south mole, utility improvements, a new ferry terminal/district office building, a stabilized/resurfaced south mole, upgrades to the ferry docking facilities, an overflow parking lot and a new comfort station.

Design work for the project should be completed by April 2008 and bids opened in June 2008.
