A man who lives in the Kaimuki area narrowly escaped major injuries early this morning when his car overturned after striking a large rock that was left in the middle of the road.

The single-car accident happened in the residential area in front of 844 22nd Ave. in the Kaimuki-Wai'alae neighborhood.

Neighbors said they had heard a commotion about a half-hour before the accident, which they said turned out to be vandals throwing a stone park bench into the street, as well as a large rock about two feet in diameter.

About 3:15 a.m., neighbors said, they were awoken by the sound of a car hitting two parked cars. When they came out they found the car on its side and the driver OK, but pinned in the vehicle.

One neighbor who attended to the driver said the driver had told him he didn't see the rock until it was too late. By that time, he hit it before also hitting two vehicles parked alongside the road and coming to a halt on its side.

Both the fire and police department responded to the call and the man was removed without serious injury.
