Tennis: Top seed Bondarenko falls in Hobart tourney

Associated Press

HOBART, Australia — Eleni Daniilidou upset top-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round match today at the Hobart International.

It was Daniilidou's first win in three attempts against Bondarenko.

"I stayed very tough today, especially the mental part," the Greek said. "I was able to mix it up a bit and play a little bit of slice and come into the net. It was always going to be harder for players who hit it flat."

Jelena Dokic of Australia, on a comeback after nearly two years of injuries, retired with an ankle injury while trailing Flavia Pennetta of Italy 5-0 in the first set of their match Tuesday night.

Australian Casey Dellacqua also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Russian Anna Lapushchenkova. Dellacqua will play Daniilidou in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia beat Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-3, 6-2, and No. 6 seed Sania Mirza of India defeated Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in other second-round matches.
