High surf already hitting Kauai's northern shores

Advertiser Staff

Ocean Safety officials report high surf and strong current on the North Shore of Kaua'i today, especially at beaches west of Hanalei Pavilion.

Kaua'i County officials have issued a news release recommending beachgoers seek other guarded beaches for swimming.

"It's disillusioning because the water appears glassy," said acting Ocean Safety Bureau supervisor Mark McKamey. "But we want to let people know that there are hazardous ocean conditions on the North Shore today and recommend that they not go swimming in the area, especially Tunnels and Ke'e beaches."

The National Weather Service's surf forecast for today said north-facing shores will face surf rapidly building to 25 feet to 30 feet and will continue tonight.

For more information about ocean conditions, Kaua'i County officials say ask a county lifeguard, visit www.kauaiexplorer.com or call the Ocean Safety Bureau at 808-241-6506.
