A fire yesterday afternoon heavily damaged a home on Lehua Street in the Fern Acres subdivision in the Mountain View area of the Big Island.

Firefighters from the Kea'au Station arrived on the scene to find the the single-story, two bedroom wooden home fully engulfed in flames, which extended from the back of the house along an attack crawl space and out of the front roof vent.

A man identified as the owner and resident of the home told fire officials he spilled gas in his garage and under his house.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control and 45 minutes to extinguish it completely.

The amount of damage to the home and its contents had not been determined as of this morning.

Fire officials were working to determine how the spilled gas was ignited.
