Registration is going on now for the 23rd annual Ala Wai Challenge.

The event Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. will feature outrigger canoe racing and Makahiki games. Teams of 12 people participate in the race for the honor of overall winner. The registration fee is $420 per team.

The outrigger canoe race covers a one-mile course along the Ala Wai Canal, while the Makahiki portion of the challenge features games such as 'Ulu Maika (bowling a round stone through pegs) and Pohaku Ho'oikaika (stone throw).

Spectators can watch the events free at Ala Wai Neighborhood Park.

There will also be lunches for sale and a free "canoe taxi service" across the canal.
