Friends of Civil Rights to honor 6 Island leaders

The Hawai'i Friends of Civil Rights will honor U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and five other island leaders Friday.

The awards banquet will be held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, starting at 5:30 p.m. Individual tickets cost $60.

Abercrombie will be recognized with a Lifetime Friends Award for his work in civil rights. The other honorees are:

  • Doris Ching, former vice president of student services at the University of Hawai'i;

  • Bill Hoshijo, executive director of the state Civil Rights Commission;

  • Scott McCaffrey, past president of the Honolulu Medical Society;

  • Mila Medallon, editor of the Fil-Am Courier;

  • and Lorna Peck, retired educator and founding member of the Hawai'i Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
