Artists of Hawaii show to no longer be annual event

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Academy of Arts changed its juried exhibition, Artists of Hawai'i, the state's most prestigious display of fine arts by Hawai'i artists, from an annual event to one that comes every second year.

The next show won't be until May 2009.

A statement from the museum quoted Michael Rooks, curator of European and American Art, as saying: "In the past, a great deal of the work chosen for Artists of Hawai'i had already been seen at other venues in Hawai'i. At this point then, the exhibition becomes more of a marketing opportunity than a platform for the exchange of ideas. We hope that this new format will provide artists an occasion to develop new work and, in the process, enhance the distinction that Artists of Hawai'i has bestowed on its participants in the past."

Like last year, Artists of Hawai'i 2009 will be juried online for the first round. Then this year's juror, Laura Hoptman, senior curator at the New Museum in New York, will conduct individual studio visits with artists for a second round.
