Shinto shrine to hold Sagicho burning ceremony

The Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha - Dazaifu Tenmangu, the Shinto shrine at 1239 Olomea St., will hold a Sagicho, the ancient ceremony of burning of old ofuda and omamori amulets that originated in the 11th century as a way to to express appreciation and to purify.

The Sagicho will be held on at 2 p.m. Jan. 20.

Volunteers will remove plastic coverings and metal ornaments from the omamori to prevent toxic fumes from harming the environment, so all old omamori and ofuda should be be taken to the shrine by Jan. 15. (Kadomatsu and dolls are not accepted.)
