American Samoa treasurer fired

Associated Press

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — American Samoa Gov. Togiola Tulafono has fired territorial Treasurer Velega Savali for failing to let other officials know the government was running out of money.

The governor sent a letter to Savali last week that was not released to the public. It gave him until Wednesday to step down. However, Savali sent a letter back to the governor on Wednesday afternoon declining to resign.

The letter challenged the governor to remove him, which he did.

Savali said in a brief interview that a messenger delivered the termination notice at a public park while he was exercising.

Savali said the governor's assessment of territorial finances was incorrect.
