Azinger rallies from hot-cold round to shoot 2-under

Advertiser Staff

Paul Azinger went from challenging for a record to almost missing a cut over an 18-hole span today in the second round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.

Azinger recorded an eagle on his final hole — the par-5 18th — to complete a five-birdie, five-bogey round of 2-under 70.

"If that doesn't make the cut I will not play the rest of the year. You can write it," said Azinger, who won here in 2000 and is the Ryder Cup captain.

Azinger had all his five birdies and one of his bogeys for a front-nine score of 4-under 31.

The 18-hole Sony record is 61 set two years ago by David Toms in the third round. The best nine-hole score is 29, accomplished by two golfers.

But on the back nine, Azinger bogeyed three holes in a row (12 to 14) and four in a five-hole span (he also bogeyed 16), dropping him to even par overall and outside the cutline of 1-under par.

Azinger shot an even-par 70 yesterday in a round that included four birdies and four bogeys.
