McLachlin's two-round score is 139, 1-under overall. The projected cut is even par.
Four other Hawai'i golfers Tadd Fujikawa, Dean Wilson, Alex Ching and Kevin Hayashi all missed the cut, where the field of 144 players is trimmed in about half for the final 36 holes of competition.
McLachlin, who shot 3-over 73 yesterday, was 1-over par after three holes today.
He then birdied holes 7, 9, 10, 12 to go to 3-under for the day. He then birdied the par-5 18th.
The $5.3 million tournament runs through Sunday.
Here are the breakdowns of Hawai'i golfers Fujikawa, Wilson, Ching and Hayashi:
Fujikawa: 74-70
Fujikawa, 17, the teen sensation who last year here became the youngest in 50 years to make a PGA Tour cut, shot an even-par 70 today.
He shot 4-over 74 yesterday and tried to rally today. He was 2-under for the day but double-bogeyed his 16th hole of the day (the par-4 sixth).
Wilson: 71-71, 2 over
Wilson, a member of the PGA Tour who shot 1-over 71 yesterday, shot another 1-over today. His two-round total is 2-over 142. A three-bogey slide over a five-hole span on his front nine boomed his chances of a good round.
Ching: 72-72, 4 over
Ching, who shot 2-over-par 72 yesterday, shot another 72 today. He double bogeyed his ninth hole to go from 1-under to 1-over.
Hayashi: 81-71, 12 over
Kevin Hayashi, who shot 11-over 81 yesterday, improved by 10 shots today, finishing with a 1-over 71. Hayashi had three bogeyes and two birdies in today's round.
