The University of Hawai'i-Manoa is considering four candidates for vice chancellor of academic affairs, a post vacated last summer.

"The search committee has identified an exciting group of excellent candidates for leadership in academic affairs," UH-Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said in a news release.

"It is important that the campus community, especially our students, have an opportunity to meet these folks and then share their thoughts with me," she said.

Neal J. Smatresk, the vice chancellor for academic affairs who guided UH-Manoa through accreditation, left UH in July for a position at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Campus meetings with the candidates have been scheduled. All of the public presentations will be at 4 p.m. in the Architecture Auditorium, Room 205. The candidates and dates:

  • Susan Bryant, a professor of development and cell biology and vice chancellor for research at the University of California-Irvine. On campus Jan. 22 and 23; public presentation forum Jan. 22.

  • Jim Staros, a professor of biochemistry and cell biology, and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Stony Brook University in New York. On campus Jan. 24 and 25; public presentation forum Jan. 24.

  • Peter Quigley, assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs at UH-Manoa. Meetings on campus Jan. 28 and 29; public presentation forum Jan. 28.

  • Diane Ullman, an associate dean for undergraduate academic programs at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and a professor of entomology at the University of California-Davis. On campus Jan. 31 and Feb. 1; public presentation forum Jan. 31.
