U.S. men's volleyball closer to Olympics

Clay Stanley helped the U.S. volleyball team move within a victory of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, leading the Americans past Cuba yesterday in the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualifying Championship at Caguas, Puerto Rico.
Stanley, a Kaiser High and UH alum, had nine kills and three aces in the United States' 25-22, 27-25, 25-18 victory. In today's championship, the Americans will face Puerto Rico, which defeated Canada, 41-39, 25-21, 25-19, in the other semifinal.
Riley Salmon added six kills, a block and an ace, and Sean Rooney had eight kills for the United States. Raydel Corrales led Cuba with 12 kills and two blocks.

MILILANI'S KEITH HONORED BY GATORADE
Mililani High sophomore Kristin Ali Keith was named Gatorade Hawai'i Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, announced yesterday.
Keith won the girls' individual state championship in 19 minutes, 31 seconds. She also placed 14th at the Foot Locker West Regional sophomore race in 19:48.

LAM SWEEPS INTO FUTURES QUARTERFINALS
Chris Lam swept through his second-round match at the $10,000 Westgate Printing Futures yesterday at Wesley Chapel, Fla. Lam, from Honolulu, beat Canadian Milan Pokrajac, 6-3, 7-5. He will face American Gregory Ouellette in a quarterfinal today.
Lam took an early 3-1 lead against Pokrajac and never had his serve broken in the first set. Pokrajac broke him immediately in the second set, taking a 3-0 advantage. Down 3-5, Lam broke serve, pulled even and broke Pokrajac again.
Lam fought off three break points in the final game and won the match with a backhand winner after a big serve.
