Salt Lake drainage channel cleanup set for Jan. 19

Advertiser Staff

Dozens of volunteers will be at the Salt Lake drainage channel to remove litter and implement simple erosion control practices from 8:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 19 at Salt Lake Elementary School on Ala Lilikoi Street.

Those taking part in the project include the Moanalua High School Class of 2009, Salt Lake Elementary School, Transportation Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and GeoTech Solutions Inc., backed by City and County of Honolulu staff members.

Protective matting will be applied on short, steep slopes where the erosion potential is high and vegetation is slow to establish. Volunteers will complete the site preparation to remove vegetation, roots and rocks so that the installed matting has direct contact with the soil, lay down the matting and then plant a common native ground cover.

"The Adopt-A-Stream workdays give service groups, families and businesses, a chance to take on and care for a specific city stream," said Iwalani Sato, the city's coordinator.

"These Adopt-A-Stream volunteers participate in cleanup efforts at their adopted sites on a quarterly basis — at least four times per year.City staff members provide the scope of work and supplies, and pick up the trash bags the following week," Sato said.

The Adopt-A-Stream Program is sponsored by the Storm Water Quality Branch of the Department of Environmental Services.
