Preps: Seabury Hall girls need OT to edge Molokai

By Robert Collias
The Maui News

OLINDA, Maui — Yacine Meyer knew what she had to do.

Six seconds remained on the clock and her Seabury Hall girls basketball team was down two points to Moloka'i in a battle of Maui Interscholastic League Division II unbeatens last night at the Erdman Athletic Center.

"Just put it in, get it in, look at my target and finish,'' Meyer said to The Maui News of her 10-foot baseline jumper that splashed through at the buzzer to end regulation and send the game to overtime, where the Spartans would prevail 46-42. "I was kind of offbalance, but I kind of knew it was going in.''

Meyer's jumper came off a long pass from Sierra Jacob — a sophomore who led the undermanned Spartans with 15 points — and it tied the game at 37. It also capped a comeback from five points down in the final 30 seconds when visiting Moloka'i missed its final three free-throw attempts.

The Spartans improved to 3-0, while the Farmers fell to 4-1. The same two teams will meet again today at 7 p.m.

The Farmers appeared to be in command of a game that was close throughout — there were eight lead changes and three ties — when they took a 37-32 lead after sophomore point guard Danna-Lynn Hooper made the first of two free throws with 30 seconds left in regulation after an intentional foul call.

Hooper, who matched her career-high with 27 points, missed the next, but it appeared moot because Moloka'i got the ball back on the intentional foul. Senior forward Kristan Forsberg was fouled two seconds later, but missed both free throws.

Seabury Hall hustled the ball down the floor and Jacob's 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go made the score 37-35. Hooper then fired a pass to a wide-open Forsberg under the basket at the other end of the floor, but it was a little high and went off Forsberg's fingertips with six seconds left.

Meyer then made her shot over the outstretched arms of two Moloka'i defenders to send the game to the 4-minute overtime.

Jacob made a free throw with 3:38 to go and then made a running bank shot in the lane to make the score 40-37. After Lesley Smith's free throws stretched the lead to five with 2:33 remaining, Hooper cut the deficit to 42-39 on a drive 23 seconds later.

Hooper made one of two free throws with 1:40 to play to make it a two-point game. It was still a two-point game, 44-42, when Meyer fell out of bounds with 16 seconds left, but Allicia Imada sealed the win for the Spartans by stripping Hooper on the way to the basket with three seconds left.

Jacob was fouled and made both free throws for the game's final points.

"Free throws, everything, Sierra was so good tonight,'' said Meyer, who finished with 12 points.

Hooper also impressed Meyer, a three-sport standout who said she is leaning toward playing volleyball at Georgia State.

The Spartans dressed only seven players because of injuries that sidelined starting guards Anuhea Rilveria (knee) and Michelle Mallen (ankle). Both are expected to play next week.

"It is tough, but it was beautiful to watch, it was beautiful,'' Seabury Hall coach Phil Tongg said. "Every time we have had a lot of adversity this year, just the way everything has been going, but the girls get done whatever needs to be done. It was just another example of that tonight. We are better team now. Yacine just comes up big so often for us.''

Hooper, who made 11 of the Farmers' 15 field goals, lamented the missed free throws — she was 4-of-7 at the line — and the final pass that went awry.

"Tough loss,'' she said. "Scoring that many points doesn't mean anything because of the outcome. I am mad at myself for the free throws and when I threw the ball away with six seconds left instead of thinking and pulling out the ball. I thought I was prepared. It was kind of in our hands and we let it slip away. We will come back hard tomorrow.''
